TAURANGA CUP
FINE FIELD ENGAGED PROSPECTS OF GAMOS GOLD VAALS LIKELY PROSPECT The principal event to be decided at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s autumn meeting, which opens on the Gate Pa course on Saturday, the Tauranga Cup, has attracted a particularly well-balanced field and every indication points to a fine contest. Kena should be improved with racing at Te Aroha and Raana, a winner at both starts at the Poverty Bay meeting last month, appeals as having good prospects. While he had to cope only with Small Boy and Happy Landing over a mile and a quarter on the latter day at Gisborne he, nevertheless, put up a solid showing and that form entitles him to consideration in this field. Gamos was impressive in his Herries Memorial Cup victory and he will need only to reproduce that form to take a power of beating. He is now going up in the weights of course but should not find that a bar to further achievement. Te Hai.’s last success was over seven furlongs at Thames and fit and well on the day he will have to be considered. Philcourt, a meritorious fourth at Pukekohe, is likely to show improvement on that running, while Pirate King and Gold Vaals, both of whom have shown to advantage on the Gate Pa course on past occasions, will not be lacking a firm following on the machines. The latter drew attention to immediate prospects by the manner in which he was finishing on at Te Aroha.
Other likely improvers include Rarotonga, The Dozer, High Delight and Very Glad, but present indications are the favourites may be found among Gamos, Gold Vaals, Philcourt and Pirate King.
