NAZI WAR AIMS

“DISINTERESTED CRUSADE” APPORTIONMENT OF EMPIRE SEIZED BY GERMANY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 16 “The British Dominions and India might proclaim their independence or, like Canada and perhaps Australia, join more powerful neighbours when England is conquered,” writes the Nazi publicist, von Studnitz, in an article in a German weekly newspaper. The Copenhagen correspondent of the Daily Telegraph interprets the article as semi-officially inspired and as revealing Nazi war aims. The suggestion is that if Germany won the war she would incorporate Ulster in Eire, transfer Gibraltar to Spain, Malta to Italy, Cyprus to Greece, Palestine to the Arabs, the Sudan to Egypt, the Falklands to the Argentine, and Bermuda to the United States. “So far,” the writer remarks, “the Nazis are apparently purely disinterestedly crusading against Britain, but Studnitz goes on to state that the remaining portions of the Empire, where wool, rubber, nickel, gold, tin and cotton are obtainable, should be “justly divided”—apparently meaning, “seized by Germany.” “England, like the Scandinavian countries and Holland,” says the Nazi writer, “will be permitted to continue her business as a freightcarrier, and will not be excluded from the European comity.” EXAGGERATED CLAIMS GERMANY’S USUAL METHODS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 15 A parallel in German methods in this war and the last one lies in the exaggerated claims of success in breaking the blockade at sea. It was seen in the last war that as the German efforts failed the higher rose the percentage of exaggeration. Whereas in 1914 the German claims were reasonably accurate, in 1917 their claims of sea successes were about 60 per cent higher than was actually attained, a figure which rose to more than 200 per cent before the war ended. Calculations now show that after only five months of war Germany has already reached the 1917 level of 60 per cent exaggeration.
