LOW STANDARD OF LIVING (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) BUDAPEST, Feb. 15 The economic warfare is sweeping away the defences of political neutrality and reducing the standard of living of South-Eastern Europe to the level of 1918-19. Meatless days, petrol rationing, coal shortages and adulterated bread are among the most obvious signs of how the war is pinching countries allegedly at peace. Coffee and tea cost 32s per lb in Budapest. A labourer’s daily wage, 3s 6d, buys 11 eggs. Snow shovellers at Zagreb get Is 9d a day. Riots are becoming more common.
