NURSES SEEK ALLOWANCE

BOARD DURING HOLIDAYS (Special tc Times) THAMES, Thursday The Thames Hospital Board recently considered a request from the Nurses’ Association that boarding allowance be paid during holidays. The chairman, Mr P. E. Brennan, said the nurses received a month's holiday a year on full pay and to grant the request would mean an increased expenditure of more than £SOO a year, for which no provision had been made. Mr W. C. Kennedy said that at every meeting of the board they were faced with a demand from some one of their employees for an increase of wages. The position of the nursing staff today was ent rely 1 different from that of a few years ago. Wages had been increased in j some cases nearly 100 per cent and j hours reduced 50 per cent. 1 Mr Danby: “You pay board allow--1 ance to farm employees when on holidays.” Mr Kennedy: "Yes, and they earn it when they work 80 hours a week.” On the chairman’s motion the question was deferred.
