DOMESTIC SCIENCE

SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS NEW TRAINING CENTRE SOUGHT Having experienced difficulty in securing a domestic science mistress to fill a vacancy on the staff, the Hamilton Technical College Board of Managers decided last night to suggest to the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, the desirability of establishing in Auckland a training centre for domestic science mistresses. It was considered that it could be attached to the Auckland University College. The principal of the school, Mr W. Fraser, said that it was almost impossible to secure domestic science mistresses. One of the main reasons appeared to be that shortly after completing their training in this department, young women became married and left their employment. Five domestic science mistresses were included on the staff of the school. Following the resignation of Miss N. Copsey, a domestic science mistress, a vacancy on the staff had been advertised. Two applications were received but both applicants had received prior positions when asked to join the staff of the school. Mr S. B. Sims considered it was a great handicap to young women having to travel to the Otago University to study domestic science. If a centre were established in Auckland more mistresses might become available.
