THREAT TO HOLLAND NAZIS MAY OCCUPY ThA'-New York Times’ Washington correspondent says that Nazi sources are allowing word to reach Washington. directly and indirectly, that the German Army may be forced by strategic and trade reasons to attempt the occupation of Holland in the spring. Diplomatic circles regard the statements as a form of German peace pressure. because t.he reports have intensified since the announcement of the tour of Mr Sumner Welles. NEUTRALITY ZONE REJECTED BY GERMANY In an official Note to the American Powers, Germany refuses to acknowledge the establishment of the 300mde security zone. It welcomes the desire of the Americas to maintain strict neutrality. The Note expresses the opinion that international | aw can be adapted to changing international conditions, but in waters where the establishment of a security zone is contemplated only those regulations valid up to the present can be taken into account German warships havo meticulously observed these regulations, therefore the Americas’ protests against the attitude of German warships is unjustified. Germany cannot recognise the Americas' authority to take unilateral measures which are not in accordance with international law. Germany’s position is different from that of the other belligerents. She had no territorial aspirations on the American continent, but Britain and France have established important bases on Islands adjoifli/ig the Americas. U-BOATS DESTROYED LONDON, Feb. 14 It is officially stated that since a destroyer sank two U-boats on February 9, the two U-boats concerned in tha sinking of the Greatfield, British Triumph and Sultan Star have been destroyed. The U-boat which sank the Sultan Star survived its victim by only half-an-hour. ACHILLES HERO SAD HOMECOMING AUCKLAND, Thursday A sad homecoming awaits Chief Yeoman of Signals L. C. Mertinson, one of the heroes of the Achilles. His 13-year-old daughter, Barbara Joan Martinson, of the Takapuna Grammar School, died after a short illness. The burial service was conducted by the Naval Chaplain, the Rev. G. T. Robson.
