PIONEER’S DEATH
SOUTH TARANAKI DAYS (Special to Times) HAWERA. Wednesday The death has occurred of one of the earliest pioneers of South Taranaki. Mr Jesse Barrow, aged 90. Mr Barrow's parents came to New Zealand 100 years ago, being one of the earliest English immigrant families to land at Petone Beach. Mr Barrow came to Hawera in 1871 when the town was merely a village. He took up a military holding at Waihi. near Hawera. He bought stock from Hawke’s Bay. Most of the rivers were unbridged, the stock having to be taken in punts or across fords. After 14 years Mr Barrow took up a virgin bush section at Te Roti, converting it into one of the best farms in the district. In 1918 he returned to Hawera. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
