FAT STOCK SALES

FIRMER DEMAND REPORTED SHARP RISE IN LAMBS AUCKLAND, Thursday At the Westlield fat stock sales yesterday steers were scarce and of | only average quality, except the very ! choicest, which ranged in price to ‘ £l6, which was 10s above last week’s 1 best bid. Buyers were forced to pay more attention to the larger selection I of cows and heifers. The average in- j crease was 10s a head, and the top ! offer of £lO 5s was 12s 6d more than 1 that of last sale. The average values j advanced by Is to 37s per 1001 b. j There were fewer sheep than last j week, and prices for wethers im- ; proved between Is and 2s a head, i rising to 29s 6d. Ewes were firm, j and were traded to 255, which was also the best price obtained a week ago. Lambs sold particularly well. Sharp rises were recorded all round, j and the principal transaction of 31s ■ represented an increase of 3s 6d in ! comparison with last week’s values. | Values for calves were disappoint- j ing after the encouraging sale last I week. The decline averaged from ; 5s to 15s a head, according to quality. ! The price of the best runner, £8 15s, I was the same as last week, and that ; of the primest vealer, £5 6s, was 4s j cheaper. Competition for pigs was particu- ! larly keen. Prices for all classes were ! fully firm, with no quotable improvement. Baconers averaged 6id per lb, and porkers 7d to 7£d. Reed, of Waerenga, topped this : section of the market with bids to £lO ss. Offerings yarded by the Paerangi Estate, of Glen Afton, changed hands to £lO. Lambs.—An average entry of lambs sold under keen competition at full late rates.
