SHIPS HELD UP

WATERSIDE TROUBLE DISPUTE OVER HEAD ROOM RETURN TO WORK TODAY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Wednesday Because of dissatisfaction among men arising out of the refusal by the employers of waterfront labour to adjust disputes relating to insufficient head room in ships’ holds, and adopting the course of referring the matter of payment for such work to the National Disputes Committee, a gang of Auckland waterside workers engaged on overseas vessels refused work on Monday. They were dismissed and placed on a two-day penalty. Next day a conference was held between the union and the employers. The latter refused to remit any portion of the penalty. The union thereupon decided that no labour will be available for any new job today. About 241 men are involved.

A further conference was held today and a decision was made that the vessels fould be manned in the ordinary way tomorrow.
