ACCIDENT CASES
ABSOLUTE LIABILITY POSTPONEMENT REQUESTED (Special to Times) GISBORNE, Tuesday A suggestion that the Government should shelve the matter of inquiring into the practicability of adopting the principle of absolute liability without regard to negligence in motor accident cases was made by Mr G. W. Hutchison, secretary of the Automobile Association (Auckland), at the annual meeting of the Gisborne auxiliary of the association. The reason for the request was that the matter was a contentious one that should not be discussed when all were required to be working in uniIt was resolved unanimously that the meeting make a respectful appeal to the Government to defer any such investigations until after the war. “The association is a non-political body, but we claim the right to criticise the legislation of any Government that affects detrimentally the welfare of motorists,” stated Mr Hutchison, who explained that the last time the association raised its voice against the proposal it was dropped. Mr Hutchison commented on the fact that there were two representatives of insurance business on the small committee. It was a fact that there would be extra insurable business if the proposed law were passed.
