CONSPIRACY CHARGE QUESTION ABOUT EMBEZZLEMENT WELLINGTON, Wdnesday hearing of the charge against the two accused Chrystall anc Aston of conspiring to defraud Hartley Roy Sellers the witness Batt said Aston told him on July 3, 1939, that Sellers had disappeared, and added that Sellers had left him at ten o'clock that morning. He then asked witness if he knew that Sellers had embezzled Racing Conference money. Witness replied m the negative, and said to Aston, “If anything has happened to Roy Sellers you have a big responsibility to shoulder." He (witness) said, “What has transpired between you and Sellers that has caused him to disappear Aston replied, “Nothing." “I told him that everything was all right," said witness. “Aston said he had money arriving next morning, representing money Sellers had embezzled and would pay in before the Racing Conference met the next day,” (Proceeding) CROQUET TITLES SOUTH AUCKLAND TOURNEY The South Auckland Croquet championship tournament was continued at the Whitiora greens today. Section winners in the doubles title for A and B grade players are:— Section 1, Mrs Hilton and Miss Joyce. Section 2, Mesdames Henrys and Stimson. Section 3, Mesdames Thomsen and Forsythe. Section 1 of the championship singles was won by Mrs Hilton. The tournament finals will be commenced tomorrow. ON WESTERN FRONT ENEMY RAID FAILS PARIS, Feb. 13 A French communique states that east of the Moselle an enemy raid, preceded by trench mortar and artillery preparation, failed completely. There was infantry and artiilery fire on the Rhine and aviation activity during the middle of the day. The temperature on the Western Front is eight degrees Fahrenheit. TERRIBLE CONDITIONS WINTER IN EUROPE LONDON, Feb. 13 Winter continues to grip Central and North Europe. Snowdrifts accumulate as coal stocks and food supplies dwindle. In Berlin offices and dwellings are like the Arctic, and overcoated and mufflered citizens huddle indoors, deprived of heat. Snow fell in Holland, where the average temperature is thirty degrees below zero. A number of steamers broke through the ice-sheet between Sweden and Denmark, and battered their way through the Elsinore Channel, but the wake froze up. The police returned to Sweden tourists who yesterday crossed the ice, alleging contravention of the migration and customs regulations.
