VALUES WELL HELD

MARKET AT FRANKTON KEEN PRICES FOR BEEF SHEEP SELL FREELY Keen bidding was the order in all sections at the Frankton sale yesterday, when the advanced level of values established last week was maintained. Prices were occasionally better in the beef section, the recent rise in the export schedule providing a stimulus to competition. Steers were forward in smaller numbers, with quality of an average standard. Bidding was keen throughout and any price changes were in favour of vendors. Heavy prime sorts were traded from £l2 5s to £l3 15s, against £l2 14s to £l4 last week, but yesterday’s cattle that obtained the top money were inferior to the best-priced cattle of last week. Medium sorts changed hands from £lO 17s 6d to £ll 17s, and smaller descriptions from £8 3s to £lO Is. Cows and heifers were equally keen of sale at fully late rates, with values in some instances showing an advance. Several sales were made at £9 16s, extra heavy prime cattle being quoted from £8 15s to £lO 10s, in comparison with £7 15s to £9 3s last week. Superior quality beasts on the whole sold better yesterday, prices for these being the best paid this year. Prime sorts were traded from £7 15s to £8 14s, and fat from £6 6s to £7 10s. A small entry of calves made late rates, while boners were again in demand. Buoyant Sheep Market The fat sheep market was again a buoyant one, and values particularly throughout the early sales, were fully firm in most instances. A feature of the market was the large proportion of ewes compared with recent weeks, wethers being forward in the smallest numbers for some months. Ewes, however, sold freely, any quality pens making from 16s to 18s, with figures up to 20s on pens with a good percentage of maiden sorts. Best wethers were auctioned from 25s to 27s 6d, in comparison with 25s 6d to 28s 6d last week, while fat descriptions from 23s to 24s 6d made the same money. Competition was hardly as keen in the late sales of the auction yesterday and some pens that made between 26s and 27s 6d late in the day would probably have fetched at least Is more earlier in the sale. Late rates were repeated for lambs. A good proportion of the fat pig entry comprised baconers, which were knocked down readily from 66s to 89s, against 66s to 88s last week. Porkers were again in keen request, and values for these were unchanged at 45s to 655. No noticeable alteration in values was recorded for a light entry of store pigs. Price Summary The following table is a summary of prices realised for fat stock at the Frankton yards at the last two sales: —•

Individual Consignments The Gordonton vendor, Mr N. K. Taylor, who sold the top-priced steers last week, again provided some of the top-priced cattle yesterday, selling heavy mixed sorts from £l2 5s to £l3 15s. Polled Angus and Hereford cattle from Mr J. Scott, were auctioned from £l3 7s to £l3 14s, while Herefords from Mr T. M. Hall, of Ohaupo Road, sold at £l3 10s. Shorthorns from Mr J. C. Potts, of Cambridge, realised from £l2 to £l2 10s. Four heavy Polled Angus cows from Mr H. Vickers sold to the bid j of £9 16s, while other entries from the same vendor made from £7 15s to £9 7s. Heifers from Mr R. G. Griffen, of Tauwhare, were traded from £7 17s 6d to £9 12s, three Herefords selling at the latter figure. A Paterangi vendor, Mr H. Meadway, sold j the top-priced cow beef entry at £lO | 10s. Entries from the Grassy Downs Estate were knocked down from £6 17s 6d to £8 14s. In the sheep section, Mr J. Mathers, of Te Rapa, sold wethers at 27s 6d, while the same money was given for entries from the Waikato Racing Club and from Mr J. H. Taylor, of Matangi. A pen from Mr W. Johnston made 265, while 26s 6d was given for those from Mr C. C. Parry.
