MARRED BY RAIN

TE AWAMUTU SHOW BIG PARADE OF STOCK HIGH STANDARD OF QUALITY RECORD ENTRY OF DRAUGHTS (Special Reporter) TE AWAMUTU, Saturday. Heavy rain that fell practically without cessation during the day ruined the prospects of a record show for the Te Awamutu Agricultural. Pastoral and Horticultural Association when it held its eighteenth annual and Centennial show at Albert Park today. Entries were up in many sections, one of the features of the show being the record showing of draught horses. Despite the unpleasant conditions, there was a fair attendance of the public. Judging was carried out under extreme difficulties, while competitors in the ring events were handicapped by the very sodden ground. Nevertheless, an excellent display of jumping was given, the keen competition in the many events providing highclass entertainment for the crowded grandstand. The quality of the stock entries was of a high standard, while the entries in most classes were particularly satisfactory. In the draught horse section, where record entries came forward, the judge, Mr A. McRobbie, of Karaka, was full of praise for the various classes, specially mentioning the female entries. The light horse section was also strongly supported, and here again the quality was excellent. Good Parade of Jerseys In the dairy cattle sections, Jerseys paraded in the largest numbers and provided a splendid quality exhibit. Mr Norman Colson, of Waihou, who judged, described the entries as a credit to the district. Quality, he said, was good throughout, particularly in the young stock, while the champion bull, Mr W. S. McEwen’s Susie’s Oxford Design, was a splendid quality bull in every way, winning on its head and carriage. Mr j. Bones’ champion cow, Greencroft Amethyst, was an outstanding cow and particularly even. Although competition was limited in some classes, quality was hard to fault in the Milking Shorthorn classes where several prominent breeders were represented. The Morrinsville breeder, Mr R. D. Cochrane, who distributed the awards, described the entries as excellent cattle, true to type. Entries were sparse in the Ayrshire section, but what entries were forward were of attractive type. The special boys’ and girls’ calf classes drew large entries and the quality throughout was the best yet seen at a Te Awamutu show. The judge, Mr W. Montgomerie, of Te Aroha, who is well known as a calf club judge in the Waikato, considered

that the calves were the best he had yet judged. Judges Praise Quality There was a good showing of fat and stud sheep, the judge of the latter, Mr P. Bremer, of Tamahere, stating that it was evident that the sheep of the district were benefiting by the imported blood available. In praising the quality of the fat sheep, the judge, Mr J. C. Potts, of Cambridge, said that the pet lambs comprised a very good class, the entries indicating that the owners had shown every care in their management. Although competition was not strong in the Tamworth, Large White and Large Black pedigree pig classes, it was keen in the Berkshire section. The Papakura judge, Mr V. H. Hatrick, described the quality of the pigs as excellent and referred to the large entries in the special export classes. Championships Light Horses:—Hack: Mrs Eric Storey’s Daylight.
