KENA’S CUP SURPRISE POHUTU TO HAILE BOY OPOTIKI TRAINERS HAT-TRICK (By Telegraph—Special from “Martian”) ROTORUA, Saturday Unpleasant weather was experienced to-day for the opening of the Rotorua Racing Club’s annual meeting, which marked the first occasion on which the new course and improved appointments were in use. Halle Boy, who had been showing excellent form over hurdles In recent weeks, bit the front at the end or lialf-a-mile and arter opening up a break of several lengths on the field across the top, went on to score convincingly. Worse Lady was finishing on. while orient Dawn, after being one of the early leaders and drifting in the latter stages, was coming again at the end. Erination was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Wapaugh, when parading prior to the race, wrenched a joint and was withdrawn. Orient Dawn jumped out smartly to lead past the stands from Halle Boy, Royal Huntress, Midland, Simlnt, X’orse Lady, Erination, Advance Acre and Diversity. Racing Into the back stretch Midland moved up behind Orient Dawn and six furlongs from home this pair was followed by Stokowski, Halle Boy, Simlnt, Royal Huntress, Advance Acre, Norse Lady and Erination. Haile Boy moved through smartly at the five-furlong peg and was In front half-a-mile from home from Midland, Stokowski and Orient Dawn. He was clear as they turned for home and In the straight went on to win by two lengths from Norse Lady, with Orient Dawn a length away. Pleuron endorsed Ills encouraging form or Matamata, while Commemoration indicated a return to form by sticking on solidly in the straight. Commemoration was prominent early, showing out over the first furlong from Vaalsmac, Merry Vaals, Glenbevan and Expellant. Merry Vaals ran right through to the front at the hair-mile, to be followed here by Expellant, Commemoration, Vaalsmac, Herbage and Pleuron. Merry Vaals was clear as they raced to tlie turn from Expellant. Glenbevan, Pleuron and Commemoration. Nothing had a chance with Merry Vaals in the straight, and lie carried

on to win bv six lengths from Pleuron. who beat Commemoration by three-quart-ers of a length. Sir Robin endorsed his winning form of Thames when he came through In the straight to score In an exciting finish with Town Section and Kenneth Robert. The winner gave the Opotikl trainer, M. R. Abbott, a “hat-trick” for the meeting as he was also the trainer of the winners of the previous two races. Sir Tommy, after hitting the front rrom the outset and looking a certain winner halfway down the running, raded out to be only another head away fourth. Sir Tommy was followed early by Pasture, Town Section, Spearford, Bronze Emerald and Valerian. At the half-mile Sir Tommy was still making play from Pasture, this pair being followed here by Valerian, Town Section, sir Robin and Spearford. Sir Tommy was clear as they laced to the turn and lie straightened up for home In Trout of Valerian, Pasture, Town section, silver Cloud, sir Robin and Spe-arford. Halfway down the running sir* Tommy commenced to tire and Sir Robin, finishing solidly on the outer, got m> to win by a bead rrom Town section, 'who also finished well to beat Kenneth Robert by a similar margin.
