AUSTRALIAN WINS

TENNIS SEMI-FINAL MISS M. BEVERLEY BEATEN MISS WYNNE NOT EXTENDED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Saturday Tennis of a high standard was seen by large galleries at Miramar when matches in the concluding stages of the New Zealand Centennial tennis championships were played today. The weather was fine when play began at noon, but a heavy shower fell at one o’clock, just when the women’s singles semi-final between Miss Wynne (Australia) and Miss M. Beverley (Waikato) was nearing conclusion. The other match in this semi-final was that between Miss Coyne (Australia) and Miss Hardcastle (Australia). Without reaching brilliant heights, both matches nevertheless were full of interest.

As expected Miss Wynne entered the final by defeating Miss Beverley, New Zealand No. 1 woman player, 6—3, 6—4. Miss Beverley stroked her shots as well as Miss Wynne, but she lacked the consistency of her opponent. Miss Beverley began well with a lead of 2—o, but Miss Wynne was soon on to her game and won without being extended. A strong feature of the Australian’s game is her backhand shots, which she plays with fluency and wonderful control. Steady rain drove the players from the courts at 1.15, only an hour after the start of play. At that stage Miss Coyne and Miss Hardcastle were s6t-all. The score in the semi-final of the men’s singles between R. Howe (Wellington) and J. Bromwich (Australia) was 3—3. Results:— Women’s Singles Semi-final.—Miss Wynne (Australia) beat Miss M.
