MEAT FOR EXPORT

HIGHER RATE FOR LAMB GISBORNE, Friday A further increase, the third since the New Year, has been announced in Gisborne in the buying rates for export fat lambs. Pig prices also have increased, the improvement in both sections being £d per lb. for all weights except in regard to chopper pigs. Sheep and cattle rates remain unchanged. The latest improvement in lamb brings the total gain for the season up to id per lb. on prime and 5-8 d on second quality. Although sheep have not advanced on this occasion the schedule is Ad higher on wethers since the commencement of the season and 3-8 d on ewes. Killings continue steadily at the Kaiti freezing works, although it is expected that if the drying winds continue fattening will be retarded and smaller numbers will be available for export. In the meantime, however, about 4000 sheep and lambs are being killed each day.
