PRESENTATION OF MEDALS ; FUNCTION AT NURSES’ HOME j A very happy function took place | yesterday afternoon in the common j room of the Nurses’ Home of the Waikato Hospital, when the successful j nurses in the recent State Examina- j tions were presented with their i medals. It was evident from the large attendance of parents, relatives and interested friends, that the privilege extended to them to participate in this pleasant ceremony is much appreciated. Members of the Hospital Board present were:—Mr F. Findlay (chairman), Mr R. Eyre (Ngaruawahia), Mr H. M. Martin (Rotorua), Mrs C. K. Wilson (Te Kuiti), Mr W. Morrice (Morrinsville), Mr J. M. Stewart (Morrinsville), Mr D. B. Livingstone (Waipa), and Mr S. C. B. Maeky (Waipa). At the commencement of the proceedings, Mr Findlay made appropriate reference to the loss suffered by the hospital and the board in the deaths of Dr. M. M. Hockin and Mr J. J. Ryburn. He congratulated the nurses on their achievements and paid a warm tribute to Dr. Graham, Miss D. E. Menzies and Miss I. Martin, the tutor sister, and her staff. He remarked on the hign percentage oi passes, 16 out of 17 nurses having gained their State General certificates, and all maternity trainees both at the Waikato Hospital and the Rotorua Hospital passing, three with honours. Miss Bonnington, matron of the Rotorua Hospital, was congratulated on this satisfactory result. Speeches by Beard Members Following the presenting of the medals eulogistic reference was made to the work of the nurses and to the high standard of service in the hospitals in the Dominion, by several board members. The announcement that the silver medal for the best till round nurse and the book for the best essay had been awarded to Nurse I. M. Wills and Nurse R. Dussus respectively was received with much acclamation. Dr. Graham spoke of the important part nurses would piay in me war and expressed the opinion that practically as much would be demanded from those who continued their duties in New Zealand as from their contemporaries serving overseas. The fact that nurses’ examinations were every year becoming more difficult was remarked upon by Miss Menzies, when briefly expressing her pleasure in the industry of the successful nurses. The function concluded with the serving of afternoon tea and a pleasant social hour spent by the guests. Mrs Graham was wearing a smart navy ensemble and a navy chip straw hat.
