The victim was, Mrs Ethel Barker, of 42 Rangitoto Avenue, Remuera, Auckland. Mrs Barker was travelling in a two-door sedan motor-car driven by her son, Mr Horace Urwin Barker, and was sitting in the seat next to the left-hand door. About four miles north of Huntly the door suddenly flew open, and in bending over to close it Mrs Barker lost her balance and fell out of the car. Effort to Save Fall At an inquest held to-day in Huntly before the coroner, Mr F. Harris, the son stated in evidence that he was travelling at about 30 miles an hour at the time. When he saw his mother overbalancing he attempted to seize her, but could not reach her. She fell with her right shoulder on the road and was dragged four or five feet before she fell clear of the car. He immediately stopped and ran back to her. His mother was conscious, and on sitting up said that she was all right except for a sore shoulder. He hailed a passing motorist and asked him to send a doctor out immediately. Dr. A. B. Jameson examined his mother and ordered her to the Huntly Hospital. She had received two cuts on the right side of the head and abrasions to the face. Mrs Iris Josephine La Fontaine Lindsay, a daughter of deceased, who was in the car, gave corroborative evidence. Dr. Jameson stated that in his opinion death was due to laceration of the surface of the right side of the brain, caused by a recent blow. A verdict of accidental death in accordance with the medical evidence was returned.
