AYRSHIRES IN DEMAND

QUALITY BULLS SOUGHT COMBINED BREEDERS’ FAIR CONCLUDING DAY YESTERDAY PAIR VALUES FOR SHORTHORNS The animated demand for Ayrshire bulls was the feature of the concluding day yesterday in the selling pavilion, Claudelands Showgrounds, of the annual bull fair of the Waikato Combined Breeders’ Association, the inquiry for bulls of this breed being probably the strongest experienced at the sale for some years. The tops of the Ayrshires sold freely from 30 to 42gns under consistent competition from a large bench of buyers. Shorthorn bulls met with fair competition, but the inquiry for Friesian bulls was a little disappointing and buyers often secured bargains. The sale was conducted by the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd., the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Messrs G. W. Vercoe and Company, Ltd., and Messrs Dalgety and Company. Ltd., with Messrs F. M. II ark - ness, E. C. Morrissey, P. G. Vercoe and R. Harding in the rostrum. Altogether I*l bulls of the three breeds were catalogued, but a number of them did not come forward, the entries that were actually offered comprising 40 Ayrshires, 28 Friesians and 32 Shorthorns. Top Realisations The top price for Shorthorns was 26-gns, this being realised in two instances, Mr J. Searle, of Cambridge, selling one at this figure, and Mr R. D. Cochrane, of Kereone, obtaining a similar price for one of his consignment. Although no spectacular values were realised for Shorthorns, the demand was keen for all quality sorts, other prices ranging from 8 to 25 gns. Thirty guineas was the highest price paid for Friesians, this being given by Mr H. G. Mickell, of Tauwhare, for a yearling. Bracken Duke Poscb, by Bushlea Korndyke Abbekcrk Posch from Duchess Alcartra Gin. The vendors were the well-known Tamahere breeders, Messrs Whewell Bros. Other Friesians changed hands from 8 to 26 gns. W. C. Wallace’s Success An indication of the keen demand for Ayrshires is provided by the fact that 14 of them sold above 30 gns. The top price of 42 gns was given by Mr B. J. Flynn, of Morrinsville, for Thirdpart Ha Claymore, a splendid yearling by the outstanding imported bull, Greenan Barascope, and from Thirdpart Ha Gipsy Countess. The vendor was the Fencourt breeder, Mr W. C. Wallace. Mr Wallace was the most successful Ayrshire vendor, two others of his attractive consignment fetching 40 gns apiece. The first was a 2-year-old son of Bonny Glen King George and Thirdpart Ha Lady Zarita in Thirdpart Ha Waratah, which sold to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Dargaville. as agents. The buyer of the other bull, Mr J. C. Wiseman, of Hautapu, secured a likely-looking yearling, Thirdpart Ha Bed Murdoch, by Greenan Barascope from Thirdpart Ha Muriel. Other Ayrshires sold readily from 16 to 39 gns, the latter figure being given for a 4-year-old from the consignment of Mr C. S-ing, of Tatuanui.
