GOLF IMPROVES

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND OF MATCH PLAY MRS MAXDER HARD PRESSED Medal scores in the two qualifying rounds of the South Auckland women's golf championships at St. Andrews links, Hamilton, yesterday, were not a credit to the competitors, but when match play opened to-day a considerable improvement was seen in the standard of golf. The work on the greens showed to better advantage. Several keen matches were played in the first round of the championship event for the Ellis Gup, but play went much according to expectations. A feature of the round, however, was the fine performance of Miss S. Gurtis, of New Plymouth, the youngest competitor, in playing the lowest handicappei player, Mrs F. Mander, of Hamilton, to a tight finish. Mrs Mander came out on top by the narow margin of 2 and I. Miss Gurtis improved greatly on her mediocre form in the qualifying rounds and her performance to-day was excellent when it is considered that she plays on a handicap of 11, whereas Mrs Mander is down to the. four mark. Mrs Day Eliminated The defeat of Mrs L. 1. Day, of Hamilton, at the hands of Mrs J. M. Wilson, of Auckland, carried with it an element of surprise. Mrs Day had played better golf than her opponent in tiie qualifying rounds, but in match play the decision was quite decisively i in Mrs Wilson’s favour. Miss J. Stewart, of Whangarei, gained a bigger margin than was expected over Mrs j G. F. Ferguson, of Auckland. Miss N. Beverley, o f Matamata, also had a big margin of victory. Match play was commenced in the Fraser Cup, u handicap contest, and the Flight match also. Results are as follows: ELLIB CUP CHAMPIONSHIP First Round Mrs P. R. Glanville beat Mrs E. C.
