TWO Y KARS’ PROBATION FARMER PLEADS GUILTY Pleading guilty before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, to-day to a charge of obtaining £l4 1 4s Od from Collis Roy Bloomfield £l4 14s 6d from Collis Roy hy means of a false cheque drawn on the Bank ol' New Zealand at Auckland. Norman Langley Rowland, aged 40, a farmer of Te Awamutu (Mr VV. J. King) was placed on probation for two years. Accused was also ordered to make restitution ol’ £l4 14s Od aud to take out and maintain a prohibition order. Detective J. Hayes said that when accused was interviewed at the detective office yesterday he made a statement admitting the offence. He said that, on May 22 he was drinking in an hotel at Te Awamutu with another man. Accused's companion produced a cheque, which he endorsed with the name of H. Stone, and asked the barman to cash It. The barman refused and accused took the cheque to % shop, where It was cashed by Bloomfield. Accused used the money for his own purposes. The other man’s correct name was Gillespie, but accused maintained that he knew him only as H. Stone. Accused was before the Court in June, 1934, on five charges of forgery and false pretences. There was some doubt as to whetiicr accused knew the cheque to be false before or after he cashed It, said Mr King. A man at Whakatane was prepared to employ accused if given the opportunity. “ You have kept out of trouble for five years,” said Mr Paterson when admitting accused to probation.
