RISE FOR BEEF

HEIFERS IN REQUEST SHARP FRANKTON ADVANCE FAT SHEEP VERY FIRM The most satisfactory vendor’s market for beef at the Frankton yards this year was experienced yesterday, when values for all classes of beef advanced, cow and heifer beef particularly being In sharp request at substantially Improved prices. Fat sheep were very firm with odd lots higher, while an increased entry of fat pigs sold more in favour of vendors. Pennpd in moderate number?, the fat rattle were generally a better quality lot than last week and this was a factor for brighter competition. While the market for ox could be described a? firmer, that for cow and heifer beef was exceptionally buoyant and easily the besl vendor’s sale for over a year. Heavy choice heifers sold freely from £ll 4s to £l2 17s fid per head, one line of 12 averaging £ll 1 is Gd and another line of 18 averaging £ll 7s 6d. Prime descriptions were traded from £lO 6s to £ll. and ordinary prime from £8 15s to £9 10s. Best row and heifer beef was quoted from 27s to 32s per 100 lb. against 25s to 30s last week, the market generally being up by at least £1 fo 30s per head and by approximately 2s per 100 lb. Tops in the ox beef section were traded from £l4 to £ls 10s per head with medium from £l2 5s to £l3 15s. A contrast, to recent markets was that practically nothing was sold below £lO. the majority of sales being transacted above £ll. Best ox was quoted from 34s to 38s per 100 lb., this being the highest quotation for ox at the yards since spring of last year. Calves sold at firmer figures, while late quotations were repeated for boner cattle. Fat Sheep and Pigs Fat sheep were available in increased supply, but despite this and also the fact that there was a fair proportion of rough quality sheep the market was fully firm with values occasionally showing an improvement. The improvement in prices for odd lines was particularly noticeable in the ewe section, some selling as high as from 29s to 30s, the highest values for ewes this year. Wethers sold freely, the best making from 27s 6d to 33s 6d and ordinary fat sorts from 23s 6d to 27s Gd. A feature of the market was the free demand for rougher quality sheep that were difficult to quit a few weeks ago. Top values would have probably been higher had the sheep been up to the standard of some lines seen at the yards during recent weeks There was little change in values for an average penning of lambs.

A larger bench of buyers had the effect of sharpening demand for fat pics, which were dearer. Baconers were quoted from 03s to 83s, with a top bid of Sis. against r,os to 77s last week. Although the entry was a very full one, there was a firming tendency in the store pig market where large stores and weaners were often from 3s to 4s per head dearer. Slips were quoted at the same money as last week, namely, 22s to 28s.
