LAND SETTLEMENT

GOVERNMENT STIMULUS LEGISLATION POSSIBLE (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WELLING T ON, Thursday The possibility of legislation to assist young men without capital to take up farming being introduced this session was mentioned by the Minister of Agriculture, the lion. W. Lee Martin, during the financial debate in the House to-night. Mr Lee Martin defended the Government’s land policy and said there were now 188,001) acres more in grass and crops than there had ever been in the history of the Dominion. “ That does not look as though we have failed with ;and settlement,” said the Minister, who added that he hoped Parliament would pass legislation this session that would give a stimulus to land settlement. Everyone knew there were many young men, farmers’ sons and others, without capital who were anxious to go on the land. He hoped that under the legislation the Government would be able to find the finance to enable these young men to go on the land.
