CONSTABLE HONOURED
FAREWELL BY MAORIS (Special to Times) TOKAAXU, Tuesday A farewell party was given last Friday night to Constable and Mrs Patterson on the eve of their departure from Tokaanu, by Mr and Mrs Hoani Te Heu lieu and members of the Waihi Pali ladies' committee. The function was held at the residence of Mr Te Heu Heu, the paramount chief of the Tuwharetoa tribe. Sub-tribes Ngati•Manunui and Ngati-Turamaklna were represented by Tiniwata Hepi, Tiaki Karani, W. Tuiri and Whatanui, and the Waikato-Maniapoto tribe by Tu Tawhiao. A valuable greenstone pendant which had formerly belonged to Major Kemp, of historical fame, was presented to (Constable Patterson. The presentation was made by Princess Lira Te Heu (Heu, a sister of the chief. A mat and a piu piu were also presented to Mr and Mrs Patterson, who were formally declared Maoris. With due ceremony Constable Patterson was initiated as a blood brother and chief of Tuwharetoa. This distinction has been conferred on only one other European, Judge F. O. V. lAcheson. Speeches from Messrs Te Jleu Heu. Tupu Paurini, Whatanui, Karami and Tu Tawhaio made evident the sincere esteem and regard which all bad for Constable Patterson, and expressed regret that duty had called him elsewhere. ■Constable Patterson suitably replied and expressed his deep appreciation of the honour conferred upon him.
