HAWERA BOOKMAKERS (By Telegrapn.—Press Association) lIAWERA, Thursday Declining to listen to one counsel's submission that a law which did not have the support of public opinion would never be obeyed, Mr A. Coleman, S.M.. in the Hawera Police Court imposed fines totalling £273 on seven accused who pleaded guilty to charges of bookmaking, keeping common gaming houses, assisting in keeping such premises, and being found thereon. The accused were William Elder, who was convicted and fined £125 for bookmaking at Hawera on June 3, and £25 for keeping a common gaining house; lan Joseph Crawford, who was convicted and fined £25 on a charge of bookmaking and £lO for assisting in keeping a gaming house; Hugh Henry Lavery, who was convicted and fined £3O and £lO on the same charges as those preferred against Elder: Alexander Creighton Lobban. who was convicted and fined £2O and £lO on the same charges as preferred against Crawford: Albert Holt, who was convicted and fined £ls on a charge of bookmaking; Revell Ammon and Charles Henry Norman Shirley were convicted and fined £1 10s each on charges of being found on gaming house premises.
