STRUGGLE FOR CANTON FIERCE FIGHTING CHINESE REPULSED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, April 20 The Hong Kong correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says Chinese hopes of recapturing Canton are considered remote. Both sides are bringing up reinforcements and bitter fighting is raging, particularly round Tsengshing. The Chinese report the recapture of Chungmu, South of Kaifeng. and the repulse of the Chinese attack on Siangyang, in the Hupeh province. Tension has suddenly developed on the coast of Fukien, where the Chinese fear the invasion of Foochow, in view of the massing of Japanese warships, and transports at the mouth of the Min river. Copyright (Received April 22. 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, April 21 The Hongkong correspondent of the Times says that despite rain the Chinese maintain pressure around Canton, and are spiritedly attacking Sunwui, near Kongmoon, where they claim that they have secured a footing. They are also bombarding Tunkun, near Shekiung. Guerillas attacked the Tsingmai aerodrome at Hainan and claim to have destroyed two Japanese aeroplanes. The Chinese are expecting an early attack on Swatow, and have ordered tile early evacuation of civilians and the removal of factory machinery and supplies inland.
