“GONE WITH THE WIND” A VERY STRONG CAST After seeing the principals in the costumes of the time and watching ! them make several scenes T doubt If 2 ' a more perfect cast for "Gone With j The Wind" could have been chosen . i (writes a Hollywood correspondent). . i Clark Gable never looked more ! dashing or romantic than he does ns ) the notorious niiett. When he walked r on 1o the set to make the bazaar dance seme in which ho shocks Atlanta so- ;> ciety by offering 150 dollars to dance 1 with Scarlett, he wore a long Mack r cape over the formal dress of the day r ! —black tail suit, lace ruffled shirt, and | big white tie—and rut a striking fig--2 ure. r | Tn the bazaar scene hundreds of - Southern belles and Confederate soli ■ diers dance a polka. An Ideal Scarlett Mr Gable overshadows everyone on the set except Vivien Leigh. who might have stepped right out of the book so perfectly does she fit in with your idea of Scarlett. j This tiny English girl has fr«sh loveliness and vivacious personality and a charm rare indeed in this town of synthetic glamour. Olivia de Havilland looks more beautiful than ever in her period costume, and seemed to be the ideal Melanie. Leslie Howard is perfect as Ashley. No War Scenes There will he no war scenes, because, if you remember, there was no actual battle in the book. Tt was all reports and rumours of battles. There will be the retreat of the Confederate troops through Atlanta, and tlm sound of guns and battle, but no real battle. While I was watching Miss Leigh do a scene a wardrobe woman was busy rubbing a beautiful taffeta frock in the <3irt to give it the dirty, dishevelled appearance necessary for one of Miss Leigh's scenes. It seemed criminal to spoil such a lovely creation, but the : movie-makers want authenticity.
