THE COLOUR BAR
MRS ROOSEVELT'S INFLUENCE CHAMPIONS THE NEGRO (Times Air Mall Service) , LONDON, March 24 A good deal of racial dynamite lies behind a rumour which I have on good authority that Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt, the President's wife, is inviting the coloured singer Marian Anderson to entertain King George and Queen Elizaibeth when they visit the White House in Washington next June. Marian Anderson ie the most accomplished negro contralto in America. But when three weeks ago she applied for a hall in Washington which is owned by the high-toned and very Tory women’s organisation known as ‘‘The Daughters of the American Revolution” she was refused in terms which left no doubt she was being barred because of her colour. Mrs Roosovelt is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She. is also foremost among champions of the negroes in this country. When she heard of this discrimination against Marian Anderson—it led to an outcry and eventually to a public petition—she promptly resigned her membership.
