AURORA AUSTRALIS DISPLAY
(To the Editor) Sir, —On the night of Monday, April 17, a display of the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, was visible over most of New Zealand, attracting wide attention in some localities. For seme years such displays have been the object of close study in New Zealand, and it would be of considerable assistance to this study if any of your readers who had the good fortune to witness this aurora would forward reports of it. The particulars required are:—(l) Time and place of observation; (2) times, given as accurately as possible, of any noticeable developments in the display; 3, a description of what was seen, accompanied if possible by a sketch showing the main forms in relation to any prominent stars in the neighbouring sky, (4) a note of any unusual colour effects; (3) any further information which the observer may consider of use. Even the briefest of reports will be acceptable, observations should he forwarded to me at the Carter Observatory, Wellington, W. I.—l am, etc., M. GEDDES. Wellington, April 18.
