LARGE SWAMP FIRE
VISIBLE FROM HAMILTON INTEREST AMONG RESIDENTS A vivid flow in the western sky lasi evening, caused by an extensive swamp Are, aroused considerable interest among Hamilton residents. The Blaze was situated on-the swamp-land behind the Hamilton lake and towards Pirongia. A fine view/ of the Are was obtained from Die top of Ruaklwi Street above the lake from where the flames could be seen leaping high into the air accompanied by a dense volume of smoke. The origin of the fire is not known. At first it was thought to be caused by the sparks from a passing railway engine but it is situated some distance from the line. It is possible that the recent wet weather followed by the hot conditions set the peat alight. There are no houses or farming laDd near the Are.
