COMING CRISIS
UKRAINE AND MEMEL UNDER GERMAN PROTECTION ACUTE SITUATION IN FEBRUARY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Dec. 14, ii. 25 &.m.) LONDON, Dec. 13 The Manchester Guardian says the problem of Polish Ukraine is more serious than that of Memel, and already a Ukrainian force is being formed in Carpathian Ruthenia, to which German officers are being drafted. The situation will probably be most acute in February. Well-informed circles express the opinion that the trouble can be solved without war, though it will create difficult problems for the Western Powers. With regard to Memel it is believed that the Lithuanians will accept “peaceful co-operation,” thereby coming under German protection. NO OBLIGATION BRITAIN AND FRANCE OTHER POWERS NOT INTERESTED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Dec. 13, 1 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 12 The official view is that the signature to the Memel Convention of 1924 does not place an obligation on England and France to defend the present State. It Is claimed that they would only be committed by a definite act of aggression. The other signatories, Italy and Japan, have shown no interest in recent developments.
