SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS
COMPLAINT FROM MINERS “LEGACY OF PAST GOVERNMENT” (Special Reporter) T PUKEMIRO, Friday The effect of shortage of rolling stock on certain miners in the Pukej miro district was commented on by a speaker at a meeting at Pukemiro toI day, attended by the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines. The speaker i charged the Government with being responsible for the present state of affairs which allowed some of the men to walk to the Pukemiro mine ten days in a fortnight to earn 10s a day. IHe explained that the shortage of ( trucks meant that there was not the work available to provide longer working hours. The lack of rolling stock was one of the legacies of the past Government, 1 explained the Minister, who said that everything was being done to supply the trucks needed by the industry. Shortage of steel and of skilled tradesmen was holding up the construction of trucks but he assured the miners that everything possible was being done to relieve' the shortage. Questioned regarding the possibility of providing relief when miners were not able to eearn a living wage the Minister said that he had been responsible for introducing a measure to deal with intermittent relief.
