BOARD SMASHED
DISQUIETING EPISODE BCENE OF RATANA DIBABTER DELIBERATE INTERFERENCE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WANGANUI, Saturday At a goods train which left Marton last evening at 10 o’clock for Wanganui was approaching the scene of the railway smash at Ratana the driver saw that the notice board limiting the speed of trains to six miles sn hour on the bend and down grade had been broken. He immediately stopped the train and found that the wooden post on wTiich the board was fixed had been snapped off just below the board. The lamps were still burning and were not interfered with. After further investigation he concluded that the damage was deliberate, some person or persons having given the post a sharp wrench causing the snap. Police are investigating. TRAIN DERAILED IN STATION YARD TRUCKS BADLY DAMAGED EARLY MORNING INCIDENT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WANGANUI, Saturday Eleven empty wagons were derailed In the Karlol Railway Station yard at 4.30 this morning. They were attaohed to a mixed train whloh left Talhape at 1.32. Bome of the truoke were extensively damaged, one slewed at right angles across the rails. The line was clear for trafflo at 3 a.m. Little damage waa done to the permanent way.
