ROMNEY RAM FAIR FIRST SALK OF SEABON STUD ENTRY BRINGS 57 GNS One of the most successful Romney ram fairs to be held In the Waikato for some year* was conducted In the selling pavilion. Claudelands Showgrounds, yesterday, when an entry of 60 flock rams was on offer to a good bench of buyers. Competition was brisk on all good-quality ranis, but inferior quality sorts were not traded so readily. Rest flock rams were auctioned at from lOgns to 204gns, with medium sorts changing hands at from Gams to 9Jgns. The values realised at the fair, which was the first of the season, augured well for the remaining fairs. A highlight of the sale , was the animated competition for a stud entry offered on account of Mr F. C. Johnstone, of Waitetuna. the proprietor of the well-known Stud. Bidding on the entry started at 20gns, but soon ran up to 57ms. when it was knocked down to Mr S. F. Fllbum, of Te Akau. who had to more than double his opening bid to secure the ram. at the highest figure yet paid at a Waikato fair. Another stud entry from Mr Johnstone sold to the same buyer at 20gns. The sale was conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co.. Ltd., in conjunction with Messrs G. W. Vercoe and Co., Ltd., with Mr G. W. Vercoe m the rostrum. F. C. Johnstone's Rams In Request The most successful vendor on the day was Mr F. C. Johnstone, of Waitetuna. whose line of 39 rams sold at the highly satisfactory average of £l3 10s. Vendors paid consistently keen prices for Mr Johnstone’s sheep, few buyers securing any below lOgns. The sheep came forward in excellent condition and were in keen request from the outset, not one withdrawal having to he made. The Feilding breeder Mr D. G. Forlong was represented by a line of particularly/ well-bred sheep, which met an animated sale. Mr Forlong’s first draft of 20 made from Bms to 17gns, and averaged just on 12gns. The entire draft was purchased by Messrs Wilson Brothers, of Waimai. Nlcely-woolled sh*ep from Messrs Blair and Son, of Wanganui, were also in sharp request and sold at prices ranging from sgns to 20Jgns. The latter figure was paid by Mr P. C. Hobin, of Te Awamutu. while Mr L. Straka, of Puhoi, paid 17gns for another good sort frorn the same draft. Bams from Mr T. S. Mason, of Halenmbe, were traded at from 4gns to 13gns. Other vendors, representative of Waikato and southern districts, also obtained satisfactory values, although buyers refused to consider inferior sheep.
