A STATE OF SIEGE.
CONDITIONS IN SHANGHAI. TENSE ATMOSPHERE PREVAILS. RELIANCE ON AIR ATTACKS. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright SHANGHAI, Aug. 12. •A state of siege has been proclaimed in the Chinese territory. I-t is considered that the Japanese are determined to use force if the Chinese do not comply with their demands. It is conjectured that they will rely on air attacks. Tlie British Consul in Shanghai has advised British subjects in outlying parts to come to the international settlement. Many are preferring to ship their families to Hongkong. The tensest atmosphere has arisen at Nanking following news of the Japanese warships’ arrival at Shanghai. A message from Tokio says the Domei News Agency reports renewed fighting at Nankow and that the Japanese captured the railway station. An inspired Domei Agency message explains that the naval measures have been taken In consequence of the murder of Lieutenant Ohyama. satisfaction for the shooting of Lieutenant Ohyama, is demanding an apology; a guarantee that there will be no recurrence; punishment of the Chinese guards who lired on tlie Japanese; compensation; and the withdrawal of the Chinese Public Safety Corps from the Shanghai area.
