THE MISSING FLIERS.
SEARCH BY PLANEB FRUITLESS. MAY BE ENDED THIS WEEK. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright HONOLULU, July 14. The seaplanes from the aircraftcarrier Lexington returned to the ship after a five hours’ search for Mrs Putnam and Captain F. J. Noonan, the two fliers lost in the Pacific since July 3. The pilots reported that they had seen no trace of the missing fliers. The searchers operated in intense heat. They were compelled to grease their faces to minimise the effects of sunburn. In spite of growing despair of finding Mrs Putnam and her companion the commander of the Lexington sent out 42 seaplanes again this morning for a final search around Howland Island. The searchers will also scan at least 600 miles of the route believed to have been followed by Mrs Putnam.
It is stated that the search may be ended on Saturday.
