THE FUTURITY STAKES. VICTORY FOR GOLD ROD. PAMELUS RUNS SECOND. Umted Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. copy right. MELBOURNE, Feb. 21. The New Zealand-bred colt Gold Rod regained the limelight when after appearing to have little chance in the running, he brilliantly pounced on the leaders to win the Futurity Stakes at the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting at Caulfleld yesterday. Pamelus seemed to have the race won when he was leading and going comfortably In the straight, with. Young Idea making a valiant effort to catch him. Gold Rod’s prospects were then regarded as hopeless, but he made a dash which carried him to a half-length victory.

Gold Rod’s performance Is a record for a horse of his age. Many three-year-olds have won the Futurity Stakes, but none with the weight of 9.4. Ammon Ra, who, like Gold Rod, was ridden by M. McCarten, won in 1932 with 9.3. Heavy rain militated against fast time for the race. Young Idea beat the much-discussed Country Party for third place. The latter may benefit from the race. Cuddle was never dangerous. Beechwood disappointed his Newmarket Handicap admirers by a poor finishing effort. Lochlee, under his heavy impost of 9.7, was not disgraced in finishing fifth in the Alma Stakes. Northwind, the Caulfield Cup winner, scored so impressively in the WoodclilT Handicap that his chances in the Australian Cup are regarded as bright. Treasure Trove advanced her record to seven seconds out of her last eight starts when she filled that position behind Afghan in the St. Clair Trial Handicap. Cynical Kid and Cape Lilock were unplaced in the Stanley Steeplechase, in which Bonnie Rollux, ridden by the New'Zealander, A. Driscoll, was narrowly beaten by Richmond Tiger.
