8700 K DEALER'B CLAIM. N 0 DRINK SINCE OCTOBER. The sentence imposed last year on an intoxicated motorist was mitigated in the Magistrate‘s Court at Hamilton to-day, when an application to Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M.. to permit the reissue of a cancelle‘d driving license was brought by \Villiam Frank Saunders. farmer and stock dealer. of Bruntwood. The applicant was represented by Mr N. S. Johnson. Applicant explained that on October 23 he had been convicted when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a car while intoxicated. a fine of £ls bc‘ ing imposed. He was also prohibited from holding a driver‘s license uniil June. 1937, without ihe‘ prior leave of the ‘Court. On one occasion since this prosecution his wife "had become ill and applicant had been required to take the wheel himself. ile‘ had been detected and punished at .\iorrinsville. Saunders stated that his occupation as a stock dealer took him into districts as far afield as Whangarei. Gls‘ borne and \Vanganui and it was found incon\'e‘nient and expensive to travel by train or service car. In order M make use of his car it was necessary for his wife or another man to drixe him. Since October he had iaken no alcohol.
In restoring applicant‘s license‘. ”in magistrate observed ihai he had already been severely punished for his lapse. and the far! that he‘ had kept away from drinking from October in June was also in his favour. In these circumstances he might have his license back. “This is. however. no pr"ccde‘ni: it has been taken purely on the fuck; of the case.“ added Mr Palerson.
