VICIOUS ASSAULT
bALVATION ARMY OFFICER .—.—- 'i MAN DEMANDINQ MONEY. HEAVY BLO\\’S STRUCK. Struck heavily on ilm body and i\\'ice in the face by a stranger. who called at his residence. Adjutant 5. Bridge, omcer—in—charge of the Saha--Ilon Army at Hamilton, received :1 severe Jostling early on Wednesday evening. The strange!- called at about 5 o‘clock at the Salvation Army ofiicers' iresidence in Selkirk Street and dejmanded half-a-crown from Adjuiant ‘Bridge. The officer noticed that ho had been drinking and refused. and l the man left after protesting for some iime.
He returned later accompanied by his wife and again took up a belligerent attitude. Adjutant Bridge stood ilrm and the man attacked him, striking him once in the chest and on the mouth and forehead. Bleeding from the mouth and with his glasses knocked o“. the adjutant closed with the man and pu‘. him on his back. Mrs Bridge and their il—year-old son, Ken. came to Mr Bridge‘s old but the stranger continued to show fight. He at last rose to his feet and seizing a heavy baton waved it in a threatening manner. The adjutant's daughter rang {or the police. “‘hen the attacker heard that, the police had been sent for from his wife. who had been trying to pacify him. he left, threatening further vengeance. Adjutant Bridge told a Waikato Times representative today that, often men called and demanded all manner of things. Many of them objected it money was refused. Only last. week two men called at his residence at. midnight demanding money and threatening to take it it it was not given. The type of man who assaulted him. however, was fortunately rare. Most at them would not so as far as that.
