Search for Lost Reef. —Tn an attempt to rediscover a rich gold reef lost through earth faults .about 20 years ago, experts from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research have begun a survey of the whole of the reef area about Reefton. This work, which is being done on behalf of the Mines Department, is probably the biggest of its kind yet undertaken. Some of the reefs in this district once yielded rich returns, but after being worked for some time were lost through faults. They broke off suddenly at various points, and, as it was not possible to rediscover them without risking large sums of money, work was abandoned. The ordinary methods of attempting to trace tlicj lost, reef would still be too -costly, but it Is thought that by geological and geophysical survey certain characteristics common lo all the faults may ho detected, making it possible for the experts to express an opinion where the old reefs began again.
