SAFELY THROUGH

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Anyone who passes down the main street of Hamilton and watches the people all busy with their Christmas shopping must realise that the Dominion has come through a prolonged depression with success. There is evidence of confidence oil all sides, and reports from the various centres indicate that Christmas trade will he well ahead of that, recorded in recent years. The rapid inoroase in the note issue shows that the holiday demand is greater, for the issue must now be a record for the Dominion. ’ Looking baok it is evident that the Government of the day steered a safe course, with the result that we have come through with our capacity to produce at a high level and the virility of the people unimpaired. It was a hard bit of road to'travel over, but it has been done, and the outlook is certainly brighter. Given careful control and a steady effort to increase efficiency the future of the Dominion is assured. We must build and not destroy, and that will be the test of those ivho have now taken over the control of national affairs. A visitor from overseas, passing down our streets, would have to admit that we arc a happily-situated community, and we have good causo to bo‘thankful,—l am, -etch 3 ;’® 1 - \ *-'• ■ an# M’INCH. Hamilton, December 20.
