AN EVENTFUL YEAR

MAYOR’S BRIEF RESUME. SEASONAL GREETINGS, “In many ways this has been an ©ventful year,” said the Mayor, Mr J. R. *Fo\V, in briefly reviewing the •council's year at the last 1935 meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last evening. Mr Fow drew attention to the municipal eleotion which he said had been a little more vocal than usual, but the results showed that the public approved of -the old and tried councillors and endorsed their policy. Mr J. B. Tidd had returned after a rest from public life and was heartily welcomed back to the chamber, while Mr W. W. Dillicar had been away on leave of absence. Mr H. M. Hammond, as chairman of the Works Committee, had been most progressive. Unlike the Mayor of Takapuna, who said his Works Committee was the “worst in the Dominion,” he could claim that the Hamilton Committee was among the best. Their work was seen in every part of the town. "Our deputy-mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, entered the lists in the wider sphere of politics and is to be congratulated on the great personal vote he received, which was a striking tribute to his popularity,*' added the Mayor. He said e*ery councillor had been loyal and attentive' to his duties and with a three years’ term they should leave a permanent mark on the town. Staff Eulogised. Under Mr W. L. Waddel, the ohief executive officer, the staff w r as most efficient. They all appreciated his services and those of his team, most of whom had a long record. The borough engineer, Mr R- Worley, had been complimented by outside bodies, who had asked for his services, and his assistant, Mr J. Baird, had much to do with the detailed work of the Bledisloe (Hall, which was unique in its type of engineering. During the year one of the counoil’s oldest servants, Mr 'Blackman, retired full of honours and with the goodwill of all who knew him and his place had ben taken by Mr Rishworth. It was hoped he would have as long and successful a term as his predecessor. “I would like to thank the council and staff for their loyalty and assistance and wish them one and all a merry Christmas and a happy New Near,” concluded the Mayor amid applause. Good Wishes Reciprocated. On behalf of the council, the de-puty-mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, thanked the Mayor for his remarks and stated that since the election they had all endeavoured to co-operate with him. Criticism was expected of any public man. He considered all councillors had worked for Hamilton and Hamilton only. The staff had been very helpful, the town clerk especially having made the councillors’ work easy. In conclusion he wished the Mayor and Mayoress a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year. Mr Waddel expressed appreciation for the remarks made and for the courtesy and consideration always extended to the staff. All the staff were anxious to co-operate with the council for the good of the town. Endorsement of the deputy-mayor’s remarks was voiced by Air W. H. Curteis- It was through the guidance and knowledge of the Mayor and the town clerk that the counicl had come to its decisions. He thanked all for the consideration which had been extended to him. Gift From Mayor. After the meeting the councillors were entertained to supper. Each councillor received the customary personal gift from the Mayor in the form of a diary inscribed with the councillor’s name.
