TRAFFIC BANNED.
ON CHRISTMAS EVE. BOROUGH COUNCIL DECISION. That portion of Victoria Street from Hood Street to Ward Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between 6.15 and 10 p.m. on /Christmas Eve, according to a decision of the Borough Council .last evening.
In reply to a question by Mr F. Best, tiio Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, said the lime had been changed from 7 p.m. to 6.15 p.m. so that all cars could leave the area enclosed in barriers early in the evening and avoid congestion. Opposition to the proposal was voiced by Mr A. M. Bisleyi He did not approve of such a scheme until there was a pfoper parking place in Victoria Street and Garden Place Hill was removed.
A Voice: Why bring that up ? Mr C. Lafferty: Cut it out. It’s ■Christmas. (Laughter). Mr Bislev considered few people ■walked on the street on Christmas Eve.
The Mayor expressed the opinion that most people did their shopping before Christmas Eve and simply went for a night out. Mr H. D. Caro said the Council had to cater for the majority of people. The few people who had cars should park them somewhere else for one night.
