HAMILTON EAST SCHOOL.

PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. MARRED BY WET WEATHER. HIGH STANDARD ATTAINED. Wet weather caused the full programme planned for the prize-giving ceremony at the 'Hamilton East School yesterday afternoon to be abandoned. It- was intended to hold an open-air function and present a display of folkdancing. It was impossible for all children of the school (nearly 500) to be gathered inside, _ but most of the older pupils and their parents were accommodated in a large double class room where the ceremony took place. Mr 11. M. Baker, chairman of the School« Committee, who presented the certificates and trophies, referred to a new feature, the presentation of attainment certificates for pupils who gained the highest places in various subjects in each form. Mr Baker expressed gratification at the excellent results of the proficiency examinations and congratulated the headmaster (Mr W. A. Gurteis) and staff on their achievement. ‘ 1-Ie pointed out. that the school was believed to be the only one in the Dominion which produced a magazine, and it was a very creditable record. Many of the children would be leaving to attend secondary schools where they would find much better conditions. It was only the primary schools which had to scratch for everything; secondary schools had all they wanted. Concluding, Mr Baker urged the boys and girls not to forget Hamilton East School, which had given them the foundations of their education. He wished them all a happy holiday and future. Proficiency Passes. Mr Curtels also extended his congratulations to his colleagues on the result of the year’s work. There were 98 per cent of passes in the proficiency examinations and 71 certificates for swimming-—the highest in the school’s history—had been awarded. Fourteen of those winning certificates had swum half a mile and 25 had swum 220 yards. The school had come second in the Waikato primary schools’ swimming sports. Concluding, Mr Curteis reminded parents that the school did not concentrate solely on such subjects as arithmetic and English, but gave the pupils a rudimentary knowledge of cultural pursuits and strove for the development of character and high ideals. Cheers, given lustily by the pupils for the chairman, the headmaster, parents and teachers, concluded the ceremony. Afterwards Hie visitors were entertained at afternoon tea and inspected an exhibition of school work, which revealed a high standard. Attainment Certificates.
