Mackley, on behalf of the board, to-day slated that eight mainline electric locomotives have been ordered for the new electrified section of the lino from Wellington to Paekakariki. The order had been placed with Messrs Cory-Wright and Salmon, whose principals, the English Electric Company, Ltd., London, will work in the closest co-operation with the railway. The first locomotive will be manufactured in England, but the rest will be built at the Ilutt Workshops, where electrical equipment will be erected and the locomotives' tested before being put into service. The engines are of a most modern type, and are specially 'designed for working on the severe gradients and curves which make railway working in New Zealand such a difficult problem.
