BRILLIANT CHESS.
MR C. J. 8. PURDY’S DISPLAY, MATCHES IN HAMILTON. Displaying remarkable ability in his play, the Australian chess champion, Mr C. J. S. Purdy, amazed local players when he engaged 28 players in simultaneous matches in Hie Cenlreway Tearooms last evening. Prior to commencing Hie tournament Mr Purdy was welcomed by the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr J. R. Fow. The matches were witnessed by an interested gallery, and (lie champion’s play was a revelation to players and spectators. Mr Purdy won 22 matches, drew four and lost two. The winning local players were Messrs E. J. Stevenson and R. Staines, while Messrs A. H. Tompkins, W. Gundry, R. Fenton (Morrinsville) and S. L. Paterson drew with Mr Purdy. This evening the Australian champion will play six simultaneous blindfold matches in the Centreway Tearooms. Mr Purdy, who is only 28 years of age, won the ohess championship of New Zealand at the age of 17. He is champion of New South Wales at the present time, having won the title for the last two years, and this year he won the Australian championship.
