ANXIETY IN BRITAIN
A DANGEROUS DEVELOPMENT. / FEARS OF CONFLICT IN MEDITERRANEAN “EMPIRE’S WORK TUMBLED INTO DUST.’’ (United Press Assn.—Eleo. Tel. Copyright.) (Received Deo. 13, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 12. The Paris correspondent of the Times says not the least significant French critics argue that Britain, after gaining the admiration of the world by its firm and disinterested support of the League of Nations, now by one stroke has tumbled into the dust the work she built up and the prestige investing it. A message from Tokyo says the Japanese newspapers denounce Britain’s hypocrisy. The Sun-Herald says many quarters believe that jyi. Laval’s conquest of Sir Samuel Hoare was due to Britain’s fears of a conflict in the Mediterranean.
The political correspondent of the Daily Mail declares: “ I can state definitely that the Government has at last realised the dangers rapidly developing in the Mediterranean.” Influential advisers of the Government share the anxiety of the majority of the Ministers about the strength of Bri tain’s defensive forces.
