Gold Shares In London. New Guinea gold shares sold in London yesterday at 4s 9d. British War Loan. British war loan, 3i per cent., sold in London yesterday at £lO6 os, same as the previous day. Proficiency Examination. Of the 37 pupils from the lluntly District High School who sat for the proficiency examination, 36 gained their proficiency certificates and one a competency certificate. Programme by Band. —The Waikato Regimental—Municipal Band, under the conductorship of Lieutenant A. E. Savage, played at the corner of Mill and Liverpool Streets, Whitiora, last evening, the programme being much appreciated by a large audience. Raffle for Doll’s House.— The raffle for the large doll’s house, conducted by St. Peter’s Ladies’ Guild, wa's completed this morning, when the draw took place in the company of police officials. The winning ticket was 187, held by Mr F. G. Small, of Fairfield. An Endurance Test. —“Speeches are a sort of ordeal which has become a habit of modern life—a test of fortitude and endurance,’’ remarked Sir Stephen Allen when presenting the prizes at the annual breaking-up ceremony of the Hamilton High School this morning. Striking Display. —A wonderful display of flowers, arranged in a large bowl and placed on a pedestal near the platform, was a pleasing sight at the annual break-up ceremony at the Hamilton High School this morning. Bluebells, antirrhinums, hydrangeas, roses, gladioli and other varieties made a delightful combination. Otorohanga Post Office. —As a result of representations regarding the need for a modern post office at Otorohanga, the Director-General of the Post Office advises that the questions of the erection of a modern post office on a more central site, in preference to altering the existing building, is at present receiving consideration. Profit Higher. —The net profit of Gordon and Gotch (Australasia), Limited, Melbourne, for the half-year ended September 30 was £33,548, compared with £31,660’ in the previous half-year. The directors recommend unchanged dividends of 4 per cent, on the preference shares and 5 per cent, on the ordinary shares.

Truok on Fire. —While a carrying contractor, Mr Graham Searancke, of Otorohanga, was proceeding along the Otorohangi-I-lonikiwi highway, the engine of his truck stalled, and upon restarting, baclced-flred, and the truck became enveloped in flames. Nearby workmen assisted to put out the tire, which was not subdued before 'extensive damage was done to the vehicle.

Hint for Parliamentarian. —“l desire to compliment the principal, Mr Wilson, on his report, and would commend to Mr Barren, our new member for Parliament., that portion which refers to the pressing need for boarding establishments in connection with the school," declared Mr C. L. MacDiarrnid, chairman of the Board of Governors, speaking at the breaking-up ceremony of the Hamilton High School this morning.

" Nature’s Soft Nurse.”—Succumbing to tile sultry atmosphere a small terrier curled itself up on a footpath in the busiest area of the town yesterday and soon sank into sweet oblivion. Not oven the roar of traffic that whirled past within a few feet of it was sufficient to disturb the slumbers of the weary puppy. Passers-by showed their solicitude by diverting from their path for fear of disturbing its repose.

New Coastal Motor-Ship. —The new motor-ship Gale-, the latest addition to the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company’s coastal fleet, arrived al Dunedin on Wednesday night from Glasgow and Durban on her maiden voyage. In outward appearance site Is a replica of the company’s Breeze. After the discharge of the Dunedin portion of her cargo she will enter the Dunedin, Wellington, Picton and Wanganui service. Captain J. B. Allsop Is in command of the Gale, which made the voyage from Clyde to Dunedin in 63 days, calling at a number of out-of-the-way ports on the voyage.

An Interesting Bloom. —An Interesting bloom is on view in the garden of Mrs E. L. Fraser, of lluntly. The flower, which is a snake-lily, is of a rich purple shade, and is of huge dimensions, narrowing to a point, and having only one petal which measures 34 inches and about 14 inches wide. A long snake-like purple tongue emerges from the centre. The stem, which is pale green in colour, spotted with while, resembling a snake’s skin, is about 3 feet long and 5 inches in circumference. Ornamental green leaves flecked with white accompany the bloom which lasts about, a week after being cut. The plant, which is a native of Western Australia, was given to Mrs Fraser 21 years ago.

Headmasters Retire. —Three Auckland primary school headmasters will retire next week on the completion of their term of service with the Auckland Education Board. They include Mr Spcneelcy Walker, headmaster since 1924 of Iho Newton Central School, and previously headmaster of the To Awamutu District High School, who is well known io llio public as originator of the annual memorial tribute paid to New Zealand’s first Governor, Captain Hobson. Forlyeighl years of service is tile record of Mr W. 15. Johns, who is retiring from Hio Palumahoc School after having controlled its affairs for the past 13 years. Mr K. C. Maclaurin, of Westmore School, is the third of the retiring headmasters. He was formerly headmaster of the Franklon School and has boon at West mere since 1929.

Currenoy in London. —Gold in London was quoted yesterday at £ i Is 2d per oz., the dollar at 4.92 9-IG, and the franc at 74 9-16, compared with £7 Is 2sd, 4.92 7-16 and 74 9-16 respectively the previous day.

Sunday Lyttelton Steamer. —In order to assist holiday travellers the Union Steam Ship Company have arranged for the Rangitira to leave Wellington on Sunday, December 22 at 7.45 p.m.

Matakl Gold Dredging, Ltd —Under date December 10, the dredgemaster reports as follows: —"Since last reporting the dredge machinery worked well, although hampered toy big stones and timber which affected the yardage. Headlines have now been shifted round and we should be across the cut again by the end of the week. The return for 133 hours 25 minutes’ work was 51 ozs. 13dwts., 10 grains.”
