A Young Sportsman. This year Viscount Milton, a young man in his twenty-fifth year, and heir to the Earldom of Fitzwilliam, will have the privilege of delivering the speech at the annual Gimcrack dinner, as his horse, Paul Beg, won the covetI ed Gimcrack Stakes event at York this week. The result was quite unforseen. It was in every sense a North Country triumph, for not only is the colt owned by the heir to the "Wentworth estate, but also he is trained at Malton toy W. Easterby, and was ridden by H. Gunn, a jockey who has done good service for tha.t stable. One of Lord Milton's ancestors was the famous owner of his day, Lord Rockingham, whose bay, Malton, proved too good for Gimcrack when they ■met. Paul Beg had been out seven times previously, and had won two small races at Ayr, while last week he was fourth in the Wynyard Plate at Stookton. This form was not thought to be good enough to suggest the likelihood of ills sucoess. For the position of favourite there was never much 'to choose between Sir F. Eley’s Barrowby Gem and Mr P. Jackson’s Don Valley. The support for the latter was so persistent that he wound up at the shorter odds. F. Templeman expected that Barrowby Gem would be too good for her stable companion, Confession Boy, and this view was borne out in Hie race. Don Valley gave a most disappointing display, being done with before half Lhe journey had been covered. Then Barrowby Gem went to lhe front, in company with Paul Beg, the result of an exciting finish being a neck victory for flic extreme outsider. Windsail finished a lenglh behind the second horse, and Confession Boy was fourth. The lime was Irnin 13 4-ssec.
