WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

AT FAIRFIELD. The Fairfield Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on the afternoon of August 21, Mrs A. L. Fow presiding over a good attendance of members. Four new members were enrolled and welcomed. Resignations from Mrs Norman and Mrs Campbell were received with regret. A presentation was made to Mrs Campbell, who has held the position of treasurer for the past eighteen months and is now leaving the district Invitations to the birthday parties of five sister Institutes were received and read. A very interesting talk on Art was given by Mrs Ramsey, who also exhibited some very beautiful work which was much admired. The roll call, “A cure for a cold,” was well responded to. The competition, six varieties of biscuits, was won by Mrs Cole. Good business was done at the “bring and buy” stall. Several jars of jam and marmalade were handed in to be distributed to Women’s Institute members in the Waikato Hospital. Mrs Ward-Chapman gave a very interesting report on the recent conference in Auckland. The tables for afternoon tea were tastefully decorated. The hostesses were Mesdames Runclman, Latta, C- A. King, and Misses Sattrup and M. Clements.

AT TE KOWHAI. The Te Kowhai Institute celebrated its fourth birthday in the Te Kowhai Hall on Wednesday. Mrs Seal presided and welcomed the visitors, including members of Whatawhata, Ilorotiu. Naw'ton-Rotokauri, Glen Massey and Ngaruawahia Institutes. Mrs Mcßride (vice-president) then presented the president and sccrctaiy with posies, expressing the esteem of the members. \ very enjoyable programme was presented as follows:— Songs, Mcsdames Wilson (2) and Harris; elocution, Miss E. Smallfleld; phayette, “Darby and Joan.” given by three To Kowhai school children, and a playreading “Aunt Jane s Emancipation, by members of the play reading circle. The candles on the birthday cake were lit by Mrs Nicholson and extinguished by Mrs Harris, two of the past presidents, and last year’s president Mrs Wcathcrley, put the knife in the’ cake. Afternoon tea was then served after which the president thanked all who had contributed to the afternoon’s programme, special thanks being accorded Mrs MacLachlan, who had made the birthday cake, and Miss Marwood who had iced the cake. The winner of.a competition was Mrs N. Nicol. Representatives of the visiting Institutes expressed their thanks for the Institute's hospitality, and the afternoon concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
